THE CONCEPT OF PARAGRAPH IN ACADEMIC WRITING AND ITS TYPES

This article examines the concept of the paragraph in academic writing and analyzes its structural components, characteristics, and main types. The paragraph is considered a fundamental structural and semantic unit of academic texts, functioning as a means of organizing ideas logically and coherently. The study highlights the essential elements of a well-developed paragraph, including the topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence. Furthermore, the article classifies paragraphs into descriptive, expository, analytical, argumentative, and compare-and-contrast types, explaining their specific functions in academic discourse. Special attention is given to coherence, cohesion, unity, and evidence-based development as key requirements of effective academic paragraphs. The findings emphasize that mastery of paragraph structure significantly improves the clarity, logical flow, and overall quality of academic writing.
